How to Care for a New Puppy in Your Home

Your new puppy has a few essential needs that must be met for both of you to be happy and get along well. These essential needs are his own space, a bathroom, puppy food, a safe environment, and attention.

The puppy's own space should be quiet and needs to include a dog bed, or crate, to sleep in,  a food bowl, a water bowl, and some chew toys.

For the bathroom, choose the area that you want him to use as his bathroom and show it to him. Take your puppy to his bathroom area when he awakes, after he eats, if he hasn't gone there in a while, and any time that he begins sniffing around and turning in circles. He will make mistakes. If you catch him in the act, say "No," then take him to his bathroom area. Just as you would not punish a child for potty accidents, do not punish your puppy for accidents. Instead, praise him every time that he is successful.

Housebreaking Your Puppy

Potty training your puppy shouldn't be a negative experience for you, or your puppy. A successful housebreaking should take approximately 2 weeks for newly acquired puppies that are from uneventful backgrounds. For puppies who have experienced negative upbringings in their first two  months of life, it could take up to 10 weeks. With determination and a set schedule, it is possible to successfully train your puppy without a major hitch. It is very important to have your new pet seen by a veterinarian before you proceed with housebreaking to determine that your puppy is healthy and has no illnesses that would hinder a positive housebreaking experience. You must also be able to set aside the time it takes to train your puppy. If you have a busy daily schedule, training will be more complicated and could possibly take longer.

Designate a specific area, either within the home or outside, for your puppy to relieve itself. If you choose an indoor environment, make sure that you have proper covering on the floor for easy removal after your puppy successfully uses the potty. Or, if you prefer that your puppy uses the outdoors, have a leash, collar, and designated outside area handy.

The first rule in training your puppy to housebreak is to never, under any circumstance, hit, chase, or yell at your puppy. These actions make it more difficult to train your puppy, and sometimes they also cause your puppy to associate you with negative experiences. Setting aside time for your puppy and keeping the puppy within eyesight at all times makes it easier for you to know when your pet may need to go to the bathroom. Study its mannerisms whenever your puppy does have an accident outside of its bathroom area. Most times you will find that the puppy's attitude changes and becomes distracted as it searches for an area to relieve itself. You will also be able to tell in time the difference between your puppy's natural curiosity of its surroundings, and when it is searching for an area to potty.

Secrets to Finding the Best Food for Your Puppy!

Trying to determine the best brand of puppy food is as impossible as trying to find out the best brand of clothes or shoes etc. What is the best brand for your friend, or the dog down the street, may not necessarily be the best brand of puppy food for you and your dog.

Obviously the best brand of puppy food will be one that has been specifically manufactured for puppies. We know that puppies need a great deal more nutrition in their diet, just like children do, and if a type of food has been made with that in mind, then it will surely be perfect to feed  your puppies.

You need to remember that once you get your puppy accustomed to one particular type or brand of food, for example, wet or dry, it may be difficult to change that option later on. Say for example, you decide you want to change from wet food to dry food; it may cause your dog to have stomach upsets when you first initially change the diet, or it may not eat it at all. You need to make sure that the decision you make you will stick with, so it may be worth feeding your puppy a mixture of wet and dry food.

How to Select Quality Food for Your Dog

Due to being the proud owner of two growing puppies, I became interested in dog nutrition and I thought I would share what I have learned with all of you so you can get the best for your pooch that your budget allows. And, best of all,  buying your dog food according to some of the stuff discussed here means you'll likely have to deal with fewer recall issues, if at all! All you gotta do is know what you're feeding your dog. Awesome, huh?
