Final result was that not only did he like the food, but that the amount of waste from  the puppy decreased meaning that he was absorbing more of it as nutrition and not as just filler. Buying a new puppy can be one of the most delightful times of your life. It can also leave you stressed and sleepless! My "puppy" is one year old now and a fantastic established adult male dog. Choosing a breed of dog for your family

What is the primary reason you are getting a dog? Is it for companionship, hunting, or protection? You must first decide this. Just because your friend Bob's pit bull is really cute, doesn't mean that's the right type of dog for you. Do you have a house and back yard large enough for a larger dog, or are you willing to walk the dog several times per day ? If not, maybe a small lap dog is your ticket to puppyhood. My personal opinion is that you can not beat a lab or lab mix for friendliness. I have a springer/lab and a labradoodle and they are the sweetest dogs I have ever had. Labs are also fantastic hunters, so if you would like a hunting companion, a Lab might be your ticket. Although it is very important to research your breeds, all breeds success relies on how you train a dog. You can train a sometimes vicious breed to be sweet, conversely your little lap dog can bite the postal carrier's foot!

A Suggestion or Two on How to Deal with a Puppy

The wife's best friend got so interested in my story about Pete, the truck puppy, he went out and bought one. A little male Doberman was just what he'd always wanted. In all fairness, he'd told us that several times in the past, so I believe that he really thought he wanted a puppy. But  wanting and having are two different things. Very different as he discovered. His job keeps him pretty busy and gone a lot. I guess it never occurred to him that puppies take time to train.

Last week, he called the wife and begged her to take the little guy or he was going to the pound. My soft hearted wife agreed and told me about it later. We have always had mixed breed dogs and found them to be great pets and companions. A pure bred never interested us before because of the possibilities of inbreeding and mental problems. She's really getting a work out with this pup and giving me a play by play report, so I've come up with a few suggestions for anyone who wants a five month old, untrained dog.

Your Vet should be able to give times when flea eggs hatch. Check with your Vet for the proper protection you need to put on your puppy. As your puppy grows flea and tick protection will need to be adjusted. The proper amount is determined by weight of the animal.

How to Housebreak Your New Puppy

The Crate Training Method

So you have a new puppy! You've got the right puppy food, the right veterinarian and have him set up in his new happy home. Does your new friend know where the bathroom is? A challenge that faces all new puppy owners is house breaking. Puppies don't come into this world knowing exactly  where their masters expect them to go and it's your job to lovingly get them over this hurdle. Before your train your puppy you have to be trained yourself. Knowing how to handle your puppy to make their first real learning experience a successful one is key.

There are a few methods on house training and knowing which one suits you and your puppy is critical. Crate training is a method used for people who simply cannot devote their entire day to the puppy. Let's face facts - people work. You can still successfully train your puppy even if you can't be at his beck and call 24/7. The idea behind crate training is very simple. You'll want a crate (or dog cage) no larger then your puppy's bed because in short dogs will not generally defecate in their sleeping environment. Crate training uses a dog's instincts to your advantage. If your dog is a large breed and his puppy size is much smaller then his adult size you can purchase a crate large enough for him to grow into and a divider to make it small enough for now. A crate too large for you puppy will often result in him making his own 'bathroom area' in the crate on the opposite side of the cage from where he sleeps.

How to Care for a New Puppy in Your Home

Your new puppy has a few essential needs that must be met for both of you to be happy and get along well. These essential needs are his own space, a bathroom, puppy food, a safe environment, and attention.

The puppy's own space should be quiet and needs to include a dog bed, or crate, to sleep in,  a food bowl, a water bowl, and some chew toys.

For the bathroom, choose the area that you want him to use as his bathroom and show it to him. Take your puppy to his bathroom area when he awakes, after he eats, if he hasn't gone there in a while, and any time that he begins sniffing around and turning in circles. He will make mistakes. If you catch him in the act, say "No," then take him to his bathroom area. Just as you would not punish a child for potty accidents, do not punish your puppy for accidents. Instead, praise him every time that he is successful.

Housebreaking Your Puppy

Potty training your puppy shouldn't be a negative experience for you, or your puppy. A successful housebreaking should take approximately 2 weeks for newly acquired puppies that are from uneventful backgrounds. For puppies who have experienced negative upbringings in their first two  months of life, it could take up to 10 weeks. With determination and a set schedule, it is possible to successfully train your puppy without a major hitch. It is very important to have your new pet seen by a veterinarian before you proceed with housebreaking to determine that your puppy is healthy and has no illnesses that would hinder a positive housebreaking experience. You must also be able to set aside the time it takes to train your puppy. If you have a busy daily schedule, training will be more complicated and could possibly take longer.

Designate a specific area, either within the home or outside, for your puppy to relieve itself. If you choose an indoor environment, make sure that you have proper covering on the floor for easy removal after your puppy successfully uses the potty. Or, if you prefer that your puppy uses the outdoors, have a leash, collar, and designated outside area handy.

The first rule in training your puppy to housebreak is to never, under any circumstance, hit, chase, or yell at your puppy. These actions make it more difficult to train your puppy, and sometimes they also cause your puppy to associate you with negative experiences. Setting aside time for your puppy and keeping the puppy within eyesight at all times makes it easier for you to know when your pet may need to go to the bathroom. Study its mannerisms whenever your puppy does have an accident outside of its bathroom area. Most times you will find that the puppy's attitude changes and becomes distracted as it searches for an area to relieve itself. You will also be able to tell in time the difference between your puppy's natural curiosity of its surroundings, and when it is searching for an area to potty.

Trying to determine the best brand of puppy food is as impossible as trying to find out the best brand of clothes or shoes etc. What is the best brand for your friend, or the dog down the street, may not necessarily be the best brand of puppy food for you and your dog.

Obviously the best brand of puppy food will be one that has been specifically manufactured for puppies. We know that puppies need a great deal more nutrition in their diet, just like children do, and if a type of food has been made with that in mind, then it will surely be perfect to feed  your puppies.
